Having inherited some vines near the village of Cos he quickly recognised the quality of certain amongst them and decided in 1811 to vinify them separately, thus the wines of Chateau Cos d`Estournel were born. The word "Cos" means hill of pebbles in old Gascon language and it is true that the vineyards of Cos d`Estournel lie on exceptionally deep layers of gravel, forcing the vines to extend further down into the earth while helps concentrate the grape flavours. The vineyards are further aided by a unique microclimate that prevents extreme fluctuations of temperature. The wines of Cos d`Estournel have become known for a style that is masculine yet elegant & powerful yet smooth. The summer of 1986 was very dry although the grapes were harvested in ideal climatic conditions. The colour is very intense, almost youthful while the bouquet is delicate with hints of cassis, spice s, liquorice & cedar wood. The tannic structure is elegant yet enormous with a rich fleshy and full palate.
